Gregory C. Keck, Ph.D. has always been interested in working with people. He served ten years as the Director of Mental Health and Substance Abuse for the City of Cleveland, and has worked with the juvenile court and correctional population, both in maximum security institutions and community-based corrections halfway houses for federal prisoners. Dr. Keck founded Parma Psychological & Counseling Associates in Parma in 1980, expanded his services to include the Attachment and Bonding Center of Ohio in 1990, and moved his practice to North Royalton in 1993. We met with Dr. Keck recently, and listened as he described the services offered by his practice;
Parma Psychological & Counseling Associates is a traditional psychological practice offering a wide range of individual and family therapy services. We treat adolescents experiencing identity issues, depression, anxiety, and other typical adolescent issues, in addition to couples having marital difficulties, senior citizens facing the challenges of aging, young children, and families struggling with their children's sleep and tantrum management problems.
At the Attachment and Bonding Center we see almost exclusively children who have been removed from their birth families due to violence, sexual abuse, or neglect. This includes children who have been placed into foster care and adopted into other families, or children who are being adopted from orphanages located in other countries. As one of the very few specialized treatment centers of our kind in world, we treat not only those from the local area, but also patients from Australia, England, Scotland, Wales, and Canada.
Unlike most mental health professionals having waiting lists that can extend for two or three months, we pride ourselves on seeing patients as quickly as possible. Many situations require prompt attention, so we set time aside for new patients that enables us to schedule appointments within a week. All of our therapists return their calls the same day, and strive to provide our patients with as much service as possible as quickly as we can. In addition to myself, we have five other therapists in this office and each of us has a different area of specialization. For cases that fall outside our areas of expertise, we offer referrals to other highly trained professionals in the local area.
I'm on the staff at Parma Community General Hospital, and we work very closely with the physicians who refer patients to us. Quite a few of our referrals come from pediatricians, and even when the family has not been referred by a physician, we always encourage them to give us permission to speak with their family's physician. This enables us to coordinate our efforts with those of the other medical practitioners and psychiatrists involved in the patient's care.
In addition to my work at Parma Psychological & Counseling Associates and Parma Community General Hospital, I also teach at the University of Akron and have co-authored two books, "Adopting the Hurt Child" and "Parenting the Hurt Child".
