When woodcarver Ed Allen had difficulty finding boxes to carve on he was forced to make his own. After other woodcarvers began asking where he got his boxes, Ed decided to test the market for pre-made boxes in 2000. Finding a healthy demand for his custom boxes, Ed, along with his wife Roberta, founded Boxes N Such in 2002 to supply woodcarvers throughout the country with a convenient source for high quality, pre-made boxes. We visited with Ed recently, and listened as he described the products Boxes N Such offers;

Boxes N Such makes a wide variety of basswood box kits designed to meet the needs of woodcarving enthusiasts. We offer recipe boxes, decorative boxes, and boxes for relief carving, in addition to wooden plates, serving trays, and wooden briefcases. Our high quality boxes are sold unassembled, which allow woodcarvers to work on a flat surface and put the box together afterward.

I also make tramp art boxes. Tramp art is an art form that dates back to the 1800s in Europe, and was popularized in this country by hobos in the 1920s and 1930s. They would take any kind of wood they found along the railroad tracks and use it to construct decorative pieces of art. I make custom boxes for a wide range of uses, and I also sell basic chip carving supplies. I have everything from individual carving tools, to a master kit for beginning woodcarvers complete with instruction books, knives, practice boards, and layout tools.

I'm Vice-President of the Great Lakes Woodcarvers, and through them we sponsor several classes a year on subjects as varied as chip carving, relief carving, and character carving. One of our upcoming classes will address the art of fan bird carving. Fan bird carving, a unique old-world style started in Sweden, is a way of splitting wood and fanning it out to make the wings of birds and tail feathers. In December we have a man from New England coming in to give a presentation on caricature carving, and the third weekend in September there will be a woodcarving show at the Strongsville Senior Center.
